Otac njemačke nacionalne opere.Jedan je od kreatora njemačkog romantičkog izraza. Karijeru je počeo kao operni dirigent u Breslauu, zatim je vodio operno kazalište u Pragu i novoosnovanu Njemačku operu u Dresdenu.
