His invention, basketball, was the subject he addressed in the inaugural printing of Britannica’s 14th Edition (1929).

  3. While working for the YMCA, James was given the task of introducing a new indoor game in 1891, with two main objectives – “make it fair for all players, and free of rough play”. Naismith turned to the childhood games of “Duck on a Rock” as he developed this new game, which would come to be known as basketball.

In 1870, his parents died of typhoid fever. Naismith, along with his older sister, Anne, and younger brother, Robbie, moved to live with their uncle, Peter Young, in nearby Bennie’s Corners.
