Son frère aîné, le baronnet Rhys Llewellyn (1910-1978), est un officier des Welsh Guards et haut-shérif du Glamorgan, tandis que son frère cadet, David Llewellyn (1916-1992), est un homme politique conservateur et député.

Llewellyn was born in Crickhowell, Brecknockshire, the younger son of Sir Harry Llewellyn, 3rd Bt. (d. 1999), an Olympic gold medallist in show jumping, and his wife, the Hon. Christine Saumarez (d. 1998). He was educated at Shrewsbury School and then received a National Certificate in Horticulture at Merrist Wood College.
