Boren, who shot underwater sequences on past Bond films, returned to film the sequences featuring a fully-functional and full-size Lotus Esprit submersible, while Meddings’ special effects unit filmed all the miniatures and mechanized models of the Lotus Esprit submarine.

Derek Meddings died of colorectal cancer on September 10th 1995, aged 64. He won a Special Achievement Award Oscar in 1979 for his work on ‘Superman’ and received the Michael Balcon Award from BAFTA in the same year.
