Born Estelle Goodwin in Lee, Kent, she decided at the age of five that she wanted to be an actress. With her mother's support, but her father's disapproval, she trained with Liverpool Repertory Company, before moving on to a career in London's West End.

An actress from the age of five, Winwood was trained at the Liverpool Repertory company.
