John Gavin nació el 8 de abril de 1931 en Los Angeles, Calífornia. Hijo de Herald Ray Golenor, de origen irlandés, y de Delia Diana Pablos, de una familia muy influyente en Sonora, México. Tras asistir a la St. John's Military Academy (Los Angeles) y a la Villanova Prep, obtuvo un BA de la Universidad de Stanford, y se graduó con un título en economía.
