With Rick Dufay taking Whitford's place, Rock in a Hard Place was released on August 27, 1982. The album reached number 32 on the Billboard 200 album chart. Only one single charted, the aforementioned "Lightning Strikes", which peaked at number 21 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart.

Rick Dufay (born Richard Marc Dufay, February 19, 1952 in Paris, France) played guitar in Aerosmith between the departure of Brad Whitford in 1981 and his subsequent rejoining (along with Joe Perry) in 1984. Before joining the band, Rick released an album called Tender Loving Abuse.
