The BDs arose from the splintering of a larger gang, the Black Gangster's Disciples. The process began with the death of the Devils Disciples leader in 1974 and the resulting formation of the Black Gangster Disciples. Currently, the BDs has as many as 300 sets, each with 30-40 members and a similar organizational structure.

History. The origins of the Gangster Disciples began in Englewood on the South Side of Chicago, Illinois, in 1964 when 13-year-old Larry "The King" Hoover joined a small street gang called the Supreme Gangsters.For years, the Supreme Gangsters had an outstanding war with the Black Disciples Nation, led by David Barksdale. In 1969, Hoover and Barksdale agreed to a ceasefire.

The gang’s origins are disputed. According to some reports, Stanley (“Tookie”) Williams and Raymond Washington, both high schoolers in Los Angeles, founded the Crips in 1971 for protection from gang violence. Others claim that Washington, inspired by the Black Panthers, formed a political group in 1969 that evolved into a street gang.
