Most of the same musicians from Conversations appear here, including trumpeter Woody Shaw, flutist Prince Lasha, altoist Sonny Simmons, and soprano sax player Clifford Jordan. And once again, Dolphy duets with bassist Richard Davis, twice this time on bass clarinet for Ellington's "Come Sunday" and on flute for Jaki Byard's "Ode to C.P."
1 de jun. de 1999 · Shaw's "A Deed For Dolphy" is first explored here, to particular advantage and Cables's Shaw-like "Think on Me' and "New World" make the proceedings especially worthwhile. The remaining tunes offer plenty of interesting exploratory comment from all, making Blackstone Legacy a strong, if only slightly atypical addition to the Woody Shaw legacy.

Shaw was born Woody Herman Shaw 11 on December 24, 1944, in Laurinburg, North Carolina, the son of Woody and Rosalie (Pegues) Shaw. The young Shaw spent most of his childhood in Newark, New Jersey, where his father was a member of the renowned Diamond Jubilee Singers gospel group. Shaw, according to his own recollection, was raised around jazz.
