The Modern Lovers est un groupe américain de rock, originaire de Boston, dans le Massachusetts. À l'origine, il n'existe que quatre ans, entre 1970 et 1974, et ne publie qu'un seul album posthume.Il se réunit une seconde fois entre 1976 et 1988.Leur style musical, parfois qualifiée de protopunk, aura cependant une forte influence sur les groupes de punk rock.
The Modern Lovers war eine US-amerikanische Rockband um Jonathan Richman, die 1970 in Boston gegründet wurde. Obwohl die Modern Lovers als Vorreiter des Punk gelten, sah sich Richman eher in der Tradition des Rock ’n’ Roll. Nach der Neugründung 1976 trat er mit seiner Begleitband unter dem Namen Jonathan Richman & The Modern Lovers auf.
