Butch Cassidy (Paul Newman) is the smart, savvy leader of The Hole in the Wall Gang, and his sidekick, the Sundance Kid (Robert Redford), ranks among the best shooters the West has known. This combination of brains and menace allows the duo to roam unchallenged, staging petty robberies when needed and otherwise kicking back at the local brothel.

"Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" must have looked like a natural on paper, but, alas, the completed film is slow and disappointing. This despite the fact that it contains several good laughs and three sound performances. The problems are two.
Butch Cassidy (played by Newman) and his companion in crime, the Sundance Kid (Redford), find that the ease they once enjoyed robbing banks and trains is rapidly coming to an end. Increasing security measures and bounties on their heads lead them—along with Sundance’s love interest, Etta Place ( Katharine Ross )—to flee to Bolivia.
The Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid screenplay was quickly snatched up by Richard Zanuck, then head of 20th Century Fox, for $400,000, the most that had been paid for a screenplay up to that time and twice as much as Zanuck was contracted by his board to spend on a single script.
