Jill Balcon (1925-2009) was educated at Roedean School and studied at the Central School of Speech and Drama before embarking on a long and successful career as an actress and broadcaster. She became well-known for her radio work and was a great promoter of poetry, frequently giving live poetry readings (often alongside her husband).

The Jewish actress Jill Balcon, the daughter of film producer Sir Michael Balcon, wife of Poet Laureate Cecil Day-Lewis and mother of actor Daniel Day-Lewis has died at the age of 84.
She was the only daughter of Michael Balcon, one of the greatest producers in British cinema. She was educated at Roedean and, thanks to the beautiful speaking voice that would serve her well in her career, became a continuity announcer at the BBC aged 19. Perhaps unsurprisingly, breaking into films wasn't too difficult.
