Nelson met producer Jerry Wexler at a party where Nelson sang songs from an unreleased album he had recorded in 1972.
8 de jul. de 2009 · Phases & Stages is my absolutely top favourite. Willie sings (deceptively) simple, plays like so easily; yet all the lines of the songs in this album ring true and deep. All of us who've been in and out of relationships will see at least a bit of ourselves in here somewhere, cutting to the quick.

If Shotgun Willie played a bit like a concept album, Phases and Stages was a full-blown one, tracing the dissolution of a marriage and devoting one side to the wife’s perspective, the second to the husband’s….Phases and Stages is easily the equal of its remarkable predecessor, a wonderful set of music that resonates deeply, as deeply as the words.
