I think this album is pretty decent overall, but the mixing on here, god damn, it really just messes with the album. Had this album got better production and mixing, I'd rate it higher, but I have to stay fair and knock off some points for that.
Noctourniquet is not the album many fans will probably desire, nor is it the master-work that will eventually sway the band's detractors. Instead, the album is music on The Mars Volta's own terms; an uncompromising venture and a bold proclamation that the band refuses to be pinned down. And in the end, that's all we really want to hear.
Background. In late 2012, following the release of the Mars Volta's sixth studio album, Noctourniquet, core members Cedric Bixler-Zavala (vocals) and Omar Rodríguez-López (guitar, production) disbanded the group after a falling out between the pair. Writing on his personal Twitter account in early 2013, Bixler-Zavala stated: "I can’t sit here and pretend any more.

Noctourniquet is the sixth studio album by American progressive rock band the Mars Volta, released on March 26, 2012 on Warner Bros. Produced by guitarist and songwriter Omar Rodriguez-Lopez, it is the band's only studio album to feature drummer Deantoni Parks, and their first album not to include contributions from guitarist John Frusciante.
