It may be a fair assumption that without his jazz background their own musical experience would have been very different. Marsalis is de tweede zoon van de jazzpianist en componist Ellis Marsalis.Zijn oudere broer, Branford Marsalis, is een beroemd saxofonist.Delfeayo, een andere broer, speelt trombone en zijn jongste broer Jason speelt drums.. Toen Wynton Marsalis 14 was, gaf hij met het New Orleans Symphony Orchestra een uitvoering van het trompetconcert van Haydn.
Wynton Marsalis wurde als zweiter der sechs Söhne des Jazzpianisten Ellis Marsalis und dessen Frau Dolores geboren. Sein älterer Bruder ist der Jazz-Saxophonist Branford Marsalis. Auch die beiden jüngeren Brüder Delfeayo (Posaune) und Jason (Schlagzeug) wurden Jazz-Musiker. Wynton begann das Trompetenspiel mit 12 Jahren.
Wynton was born in New Orleans, Louisiana on October 18, 1961, to jazz pianist and music educator Ellis Marsalis Jr. and Dolores Marsalis. He is the second of six sons, preceded by Branford Marsalis and followed by siblings Ellis III, Delfeayo, Mboya and Jason. From an early age, Wynton’s father Ellis encouraged him to channel himself into music.
