"Blue Jean" is a song written and recorded by the English singer-songwriter David Bowie for his sixteenth studio album Tonight (1984). One of only two tracks on the album to be written entirely by Bowie, it was released as a single ahead of the album and charted in the United States, peaking at No. 8, becoming his 5th and last top 10 hit with no features.

Although it initially sold well, Tonight was poorly received by critics, and in later years Bowie distanced himself from the album. The recording of Tonight began less than five months after Bowie’s longest and most successful tour to date.

The song was considered as a fourth single from Black Tie White Noise, but the plan was shelved after the poor commercial performance of ‘Miracle Goodnight’.. Hintergrund. Bowie beschrieb das Album, das unmittelbar nach der letzten Tour seines vorherigen Albums Let’s Dance veröffentlicht wurde, als Versuch, „sozusagen bei der Sache zu bleiben“ und das neue Publikum zu behalten, das er in der letzten Zeit gewonnen hatte. Bowie war während der Tournee mit dem Songwriting kaum vorangekommen.
