Schiffrin's daughter, journalist Anya Schiffrin, is married to the economist and Nobel Prize winner Joseph Stiglitz. His daughter Natalia is married to international lawyer Philippe Sands. Schiffrin died on December 1, 2013, in Paris from pancreatic cancer.
