In 1969, Sam had a breakout performance at the Ann Arbor Blues Festival and was poised for a bright career before tragedy struck. On December 1st, 1969, at the age of only 32, Sam suddenly and unexpectedly died of a heart attack.

Samuel James Maghett dit Magic Sam, né le 14 février 1937 à Grenada, dans l'État du Mississippi, et mort le 1 er décembre 1969, est un guitariste et chanteur de blues américain. Il est souvent considéré comme l'un des créateurs du style de blues « West Side », aux sonorités rudes, issu du West Side de Chicago.

Magic Sam, unlike most of his blues contemporaries, was born and raised in a community where fiddle music, hoedowns and square dances held sway over the blues among the African American population. Roy Moses, a renowned black fiddler in Grenada County, was not only the leading caller of steps at such dances, but also a mentor and inspiration to younger local musicians.
