The initial invasion of Okinawa on 1 April 1945 was the largest amphibious assault in the Pacific Theater of World War II.

He was educated at Bedford School and later studied Mining Engineering at London University,where he joined the university's air squadron. His instructor was the adjutant, F/Lt. John Grandy, later a Marshal of the RAF.

Hancock retired from the RAF on 12th August 1958 as a Squadron Leader, retaining the rank of Wing Commander. Called up at the outbreak of war, he went to No. 1 ITW Cambridge.
