The voice was at once light and dark — think Emma Kirkby in a John Le Carre novel. Given that Kirkby and Co had covered most of the Baroque, it was hard to see where an unknown from Brno would go.

There’s a track on Arooj Aftab ’s upcoming album that perhaps needs clarifying. ‘Whiskey’ might be named after the popular fermented grain liquor but its use is not necessarily what the song is advocating for. At least, it’s not where the story takes us.
