It was built in the 15th century and is considered one of the finest examples of Renaissance architecture in the region. The castle is located on the banks of the Loire River and is surrounded by a moat.

Castle Fraser is more popularly known as the grandest castle of Mar and is one of the largest tower houses in all of Scotland. Michael Fraser, the 6th Laird of Fraser, set construction in motion in 1575. The castle was completed 66 years later in 1636.

(fn. 1) The surviving building, 46.3 m. × 33.5 m., is the largest Norman keep in England, larger than the White Tower of London which was built on a similar plan.
