The usual suspects, Anohana, Clannad (mainly After Story), and Angel Beats all have their reputation for being very sad as well, and I'd agree for the most part (although, I personally think Kanon is Key's saddest, but that's an unpopular opinion). Saddest anime I've ever watched. Plastic Memories, Death Parade, Tokyo Magnitude 8.0, School-Live, Colorful, Charlotte, Orange, Madoka Magica, Sagrada Reset, The anthem of the heart, and Clannad. Even if the three you mentioned are spoiled for you they are still worth a watch, especially Plastic Memories.
NeophyteNobody. •. Just to be clear, Clannad After Story is the one that makes people cry. The first season is just a pretty typical Key Visual novel adaptation. It's not the worst, but also not why the series gets brought up. Unfortunately you do have to watch it first.

Yes there are some sad moments, a breakfast scene is very powerful. The story has some depressing and enraging moments, but mixed in are some wholesome and hopeful ones. Overall, it's more of a mystery thriller with a very nostalgic feel to it. No, not really. I actually just finished it today!

Orange. Your Name and Weathering with you - if you want to watch something where all hope is lost, but somehow everything turns out to be perfectly happy. Toradora - not exactly sad, but yeah, has some real dramatic sad moments and a wholesome and happy ending. Oregairu - depends on the girl you like, lol.

Penguindrum is about 2 brothers who take thier sick sister to the aquarium one day and she dies. They meet a spirit inside a penguin hat that tells them it can prolong her life if they help it find something.
