Waris Dirie nació en el seno de una familia nómada musulmana de doce hijos somalí del clan de Darod. Waris significa “Flor del desierto”. Su fecha de nacimiento exacta es desconocida aunque sí se sabe el año, 1965. Cuando tenía cuatro años de edad sufrió la mutilación genital femenina de tipo III.
Dirie was born as one of twelve children into a nomadic family in 1965 in the area of Galkayo. Her first name, Waris, means desert flower. In her autobiography, Dirie explained how as a four-year-old, she was raped by her cousin.
