By Cookist. 335. A cake smash is a smaller cake that looks like a copy of the real deal. It is usually one-layered and less decorated than the main cake as it is created for one purpose alone — a decision left to the birthday boys/girls who often choose utter destruction of the cake.

One of the theories is that the smash cake comes from the Mexican birthday tradition of mordida de pastel. After the birthday celebrant blows out their candles, tradition says that they should take a bite of the cake for good luck, sans utensils.
