Rowan Atkinson was raised Anglican, but became critical of the Church of England and its clergy. He is a strong advocate of free speech and has protested against laws that limit it, especially regarding religion and homosexuality.
Atkinson opposed the Serious Organised Crime and Police Act 2005 to outlaw inciting religious hatred, arguing that, "freedom to criticise ideas – any ideas even if they are sincerely held beliefs – is one of the fundamental freedoms of society.
