Indeed, as members of the bear family, giant pandas possess the digestive system of a carnivore, although they have evolved to depend almost entirely on bamboo. This reliance on bamboo leaves them vulnerable to any loss of their habitat – currently the major threat to their survival.
Giant pandas have unique feeding habits that revolve around their primarily bamboo-based diet. Spending around 14 hours per day feeding, pandas assume a sitting position and use their teeth to strip the tough outer layers of bamboo before consuming the inner tissue.

1,864 wild giant pandas were counted during a 2014 survey. An adult panda can weigh about 100-150kg and grow up to 150cm long. Pandas feed for up to 14 hours a day and can eat up to 38kg of bamboo. When born, a panda cub is just 1/900th the size of its mother.
