The metamorphosis of the mosquito into an adult is completed within the pupal case. The pupal case thus serves as a factory wherein the mosquito makes an adult out of a larva. The adult mosquito splits the pupal case and emerges to the surface of the water where it rests until its body dries and hardens.
Holometabolism, also called complete metamorphosis, is a form of insect development which includes four life stages: egg, larva, pupa, and imago (or adult). Holometabolism is a synapomorphic trait of all insects in the superorder Holometabola .
Mosquitoes are holometabolous insects. This means that, just as caterpillars develop into butterflies, mosquitoes undergo a complete metamorphosis, hatching from eggs into larvae, then into a pupal phase (where the juvenile form liquifies and reforms into the adult body), finally hatching as fully adult flies .
