The rat is one of the two characters in Lady and the Tramp to die, and the only antagonist to die. The other death was one of the dogs in the pound being put down off-screen. The first scene of Lady chasing the rat is not included in many book versions.
As Lulu's parents hear the commotion, followed by Elliot, Tramp suddenly kills the rat under the fallen curtain, saving Lulu from the rat. Later when Lady returns home, Jim Dear and Darling became aware of the rat that came into their house causing trouble all along, unaware that Tramp killed the rat.

Finally, Tramp manages to corner the rat behind the couch and kill it. Having been alerted by the commotion, Aunt Sarah arrives and, not seeing the rat, mistakenly believes that Lady and Tramp had attempted to harm the baby, promptly locking Lady in the basement and sending Tramp off to the pound.
Jim Dear and Darling return home to find that Sarah has locked Lady in the cellar and handed Tramp over to the dogcatcher to be euthanized. Disbelieving Sarah's story, Jim Dear frees Lady, who immediately shows them the dead rat.
