In Cuzco, Penn captured images of indigenous Peruvian people that began his interest in ethnographic photography. He would retrospectively cement his legacy as one of the landmark photographers in the medium’s history.

  5. 2 de oct. de 2019 · After finishing a fashion shoot for Vogue magazine in Peru, Irving Penn set off for Cuzco, the ancient Incan capital, where he rented the studio of a local photographer. Penn worked during the Christmas holidays, a time when indigenous peoples traveled to the city to sell their crafts and wares.

  6. Following an experience in Cuzco working in a daylight studio, Penn sought out other opportunities to improvise or bring a studio with him to make portraits in a neutral environment. These encounters attempted to bridge the gaps of language, culture, and geography, to connect on a human level.
