Stephen McDannell Hillenburg (August 21, 1961 – November 26, 2018) was an American animator, writer, producer, director, voice actor, marine science educator, and entrepreneur. He was best known for creating the animated television series SpongeBob SquarePants for Nickelodeon in 1999.

Alumnus Stephen Hillenburg, creator of SpongeBob SquarePants, died in 2018 after a long illness. He was influenced by his CalArts faculty mentor, Jules Engel, and supported the Institute through scholarships and endowments.
