The M42 ended an era that started in 1916 with the first German helmet. While the M42 with it’s simplified raw edge maybe not have been as flashy as it’s predecessors the helmet still did the trick, and protected German soldiers from Kursk to the fall of Berlin.
The Stahlhelm ('steel helmet') is a German military steel combat helmet intended to provide protection against shrapnels and fragments or shards of grenades. The term Stahlhelm refers both to a generic steel helmet and more specifically to the distinctive German military design.

Exist as double decal (M34 , M35) , single decal (M35 , M40 , M42) and without decal (M40 Quist , M42). I explicitly kept M40 DD out of the above list as for me at this point there is no proof Factory DD M40 were ever made. Only a handful of M40 DD Heer helmets are known to exist and they are from different makers.
