Seaweed J. Stubbs is a student at Patterson Park High and prominent dancer on The Corny Collins Show's segregated Rhythm and Blues Day, better known as "Negro Day." He is the son of Motormouth Maybelle and the older brother of Inez Stubbs.

Pleasantly plump teenager Tracy Turnblad auditions to be on Baltimore's most popular dance show - The Corny Collins Show - and lands a prime spot. Through her newfound fame, she becomes determined to help her friends and end the racial segregation that has been a staple of the show.
Given detention for skipping class, Tracy discovers the "Negro Day" kids practicing in the detention room and befriends Motormouth Maybelle's son, Seaweed, who teaches her several dance moves. While leaving detention, she inadvertently meets Link, dreaming of life with him.
