Viajó a Nueva York por vez primera en 1980 y, dos años más tarde, casado y padre de familia, se instaló allí y abrió un estudio. En 1982 realiza su primera gran pintura al fresco, los murales de la piscina del doctor Huvert Burda. Ese mismo año participó en documenta 7 de Kassel.

Emerging on the New York art scene in the 1980s, Clemente was recognized as part of the new generation of figurative painters labeled Neo-Expressionists, and the peripatetic Italian painters known as the Transavanguardia.
WORKS 1978-2018. The Brant Foundation Art Study Center is pleased to announce a survey of works by Francesco Clemente, on view from November 12, 2018 through March 2019.
Categorized as a Neo-Expressionist during the 1980s, Clemente has largely shunned the restrictive label of movements and styles. Seeking various outlets for his creativity, in 1998 he produced around 200 original works for director Alfonso Cuaròn’s film Great Expectations. Clemente continues to live and work in New York, NY.
