English. The IMF and World Bank launched the Heavily Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) Initiative in 1996 to ensure that no poor country faces an unmanageable debt burden. In 2005, to accelerate progress toward the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, the HIPC Initiative was supplemented by the Multilateral Debt Relief Initiative.
Data are shown for low- and middle-income countries that report public and publicly guaranteed external debt to the World Bank’s Debtor Reporting System (DRS). The tables also include key debt ratios and the composition of external debt stocks and flows for each country.
2023. GLOBAL DEBT MONITOR. Highlights. Global debt declined 10 percentage points of GDP and reached 238 percent of GDP in 2022. In U.S. dollars, global debt remained stable at USD 235 trillion. The fall in public debt slowed compared to the previous year, as it fell 3.6 percentage points of GDP to 92 percent of GDP in 2022.

Borrowing by governments accounted for slightly more than half of the increase, as the global public debt ratio jumped to a record 99 percent of GDP.
