Percy LeBaron Spencer (July 19, 1894 – September 8, 1970) was an American physicist and inventor who became known as the inventor of the microwave oven.
One day at work in 1945 Spencer was standing next to an active magnetron when a candy bar in his pocket melted. Intrigued, he sent out for unpopped popcorn. When it popped in front of the magnetron, he realized that microwaves could cook food.

He stopped for a minute in front of a magnetron, an electronic vacuum tube that generates high-frequency radio waves. Suddenly feeling a strange sensation, he noticed that the chocolate bar in his pocket was melting.
One day while working near the magnetrons that produced microwaves, Spencer noticed a peanut butter candy bar in his pocket had begun to melt — shortly after, the microwave oven was born.

Following the war, Spencer was in one of the Raytheon laboratories when he approached a magnetron and noticed that the chocolate bar in his pocket had started to melt, which he didn’t notice at the time was due to the radar’s microwaves.
