The Center for Cetacean Research and Conservation (CCRC) was founded nearly three decades ago by President and Director Nan Hauser. Its affiliated venture, Cook Islands Whale Research Project, investigates all species of whales, primarily focusing on the humpback whale population that travels through the equatorial South Pacific.
Saved by a Whale. Nan Hauser has spent much of her adult life raising her family in Brunswick and in the South Pacific Cook Islands. Many locals know of the charismatic nurse-turned-whale biologist who spent the better part of three decades studying humpback whales in Rarotonga, her research base.
One day, while out filming, whale scientist, Nan Hauser, was suddenly faced with the largest tiger shark she had seen in her life. That was until a whale lead her back to the safety of her boat. After the incredible encounter, Nan never expected to see the whale again. Yet, amazingly, a year later, the whale returned.
