In 1975, two men, Lynch and Byrne, allegedly kidnapped Sam Bronfman, the heir to the Seagram fortune, and held him for ransom for over a week. They were caught by police with Bronfman blindfolded in Lynch's apartment. At trial, Lynch claimed that the whole kidnapping was a hoax orchestrated by Bronfman to extort money from his family.
