The League of Nations (1920 – 1946) was the first intergovernmental organization established “to promote international cooperation and to achieve international peace and security”. It is often referred to as the “predecessor” of the United Nations.

The League of Nations (French: Société des Nations [sɔsjete de nɑsjɔ̃]) was the first worldwide intergovernmental organisation whose principal mission was to maintain world peace. It was founded on 10 January 1920 by the Paris Peace Conference that ended the First World War.
The Covenant of the League of Nations was integrated into the Treaty and all other peace settlements signed in Paris after World War I. The Covenant constituted of a preamble and 26 articles. It defined the main function of the League: to “ promote international co-operation and to achieve international peace and security”.
