Many of his physical and spiritual traumas provided material for his books. Reunited with his parents after the war, Kosinski returned to school and received degrees in history and political science from the University of Łódź in the mid-1950s. After studying in the Soviet Union he immigrated to the United States in 1957.

Jerzy Kosiński, the Polish novelist and Holocaust survivor, committed suicide in May 1991. Like other individuals suffering with chronic medical illnesses, he chose suicide as a means of controlling the course of his disease and the circumstances of his death. ^ Article in Newsweek, May 13, 1991.
