House floors in Spanish? (ground vs first floor) Use of language. Just wondering how floors in houses are catagorised in Spanish speaking countries? For example, it's different with American vs British English: So far I've found conflicting results.
Planta Baja: Ground Floor. In Mexico City, our Amigos D.F. return to tell us something about arquitectura ( architecture) in el D.F. (in Mexico City, that is). Indicating a nearby building, we hear: O sea, abajo es una zona comercial, todo lo que vendría a ser la planta baja... y arriba, allá, son este... departamentos residenciales.

In Spanish-speaking countries, the ground floor of a building is not counted as a floor. The ground floor is called la planta baja, and floors begin above. Thus, what English speakers call the second floor is actually el primer piso in Spanish:
