Scrooge’s nephew, Fred, enters the office, wishing a merry Christmas. Unlike Scrooge, he is a picture of health and happiness. Scrooge replies with “Bah! Humbug!” He says he doesn’t understand how his nephew can be merry when he is so poor. Fred wittily responds that Scrooge has no right to meanness when he is so rich.

He is the mouthpiece for Dickens’s views about Christmas.
Character Analysis. Scrooge's nephew, the son of his beloved but now dead sister, is his only living relative, and also the only person who wants to pull him out of isolation and back into the world. Let's be honest—Fred doesn't have much of a personality. Sorry Fred, you know it's true.
