A compass rose, sometimes called a wind rose, rose of the winds or compass star, is a figure on a compass, map, nautical chart, or monument used to display the orientation of the cardinal directions (north, east, south, and west) and their intermediate points.

Nautical charts often feature very precise compass roses which are marked with a full 360° and show both true north and magnetic north, while maps intended to help people find their way through a network of roads don’t require indicators with that much information.
