Wilson was born in Dallas, the eldest of three sons of photographer Laura Cunningham Wilson (b. 1939) and Robert Andrew Wilson (1941–2017), an advertising executive and operator of a public television station. His younger brothers Owen and Luke are also actors.
Andrew married Nnogo Obiamiwe (of African American background) in 2003, the two have a son named Joseph Obiamiwe Wilson AKA Joey born in 2003. Andrew and Nnogo have been divorced, Andrew lives in California.
