Depicted as a protector of graves as early as the First Dynasty ( c. 3100 – c. 2890 BC ), Anubis was also an embalmer. By the Middle Kingdom (c. 2055–1650 BC) he was replaced by Osiris in his role as lord of the underworld. One of his prominent roles was as a god who ushered souls into the afterlife.
With his scales of justice, Anubis would determine whether the soul was worthy of entering the Field of Reeds, the Egyptian paradise. This role as judge and guardian of the scales emphasized Anubis’s connection to truth, morality, and the ultimate fate of the soul.

While he certainly was associated with death and the Underworld, his role was far more complex than this epithet might suggest. In fact, Anubis’s specific role was constantly evolving in Egyptian religion.
13 de ago. de 2022 · A revered figure in ancient Egypt, Anubis was a jackal-headed god that ruled over the domain of death and judged a person's soul in the afterlife. Many of those mummified dogs discovered in the 4,000-year-old Egyptian catacombs as an offering to the jackal-headed god of death were puppies.
