PALSAR was one of three instruments on the Advanced Land Observing Satellite (ALOS), also known as DAICHI, developed to contribute to the fields of mapping, precise regional land-coverage observation, disaster monitoring, and resource surveying.

In the ALOS PALSAR Online Dissemination Service and catalogue the data is collection based and allows data browse and download through the treeview and offers an interactive map for identifying available products.

The Phased Array L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (PALSAR) aboard ALOS-1 was a successor sensor to the synthetic aperture radar on board JERS-1 with more advanced functions such as higher spatial resolution capability, variable off-nadir angles and additional modes such as full-polarimetry mode and ScanSAR mode.
