15 de dic. de 2021 · Global debt rose by 28 percentage points to 256 percent of GDP, in 2020, according to the latest update of the IMF’s Global Debt Database. Borrowing by governments accounted for slightly more than half of the increase, as the global public debt ratio jumped to a record 99 percent of GDP.

Data are shown for low- and middle-income countries that report public and publicly guaranteed external debt to the World Bank’s Debtor Reporting System (DRS). The tables also include key debt ratios and the composition of external debt stocks and flows for each country.
The poorest countries eligible to borrow from the World Bank’s International Development Association (IDA) paid a record $88.9 billion in debt-servicing costs in 2022, 4.8 percent more than in 2021. The world’s poorest face the risk of debt crises as borrowing costs surge.
How does debt relief help poor countries and the poor? Debt relief is part of a larger effort to address the development needs of low-income countries. For debt reduction to have a tangible impact on poverty, the additional money needs to be spent on programs that benefit the poor.
Highlights. Global debt declined 10 percentage points of GDP and reached 238 percent of GDP in 2022. In U.S. dollars, global debt remained stable at USD 235 trillion. The fall in public debt slowed compared to the previous year, as it fell 3.6 percentage points of GDP to 92 percent of GDP in 2022.
