1 de mar. de 2007 · In this article we discuss the etiology and pathogenesis of volvulus of the colon. Because there are differences in the factors that are associated with volvulus in various portions of the colon we address volvulus of the cecum, transverse colon, splenic flexure, and sigmoid colon as separate entities.

1 de mar. de 2007 · Colonic volvulus is the third leading cause of colonic obstruction worldwide, occurring at two principal locations: the sigmoid colon and cecum. In Western countries, sigmoid volvulus preferentially affects elderly men whereas cecal volvulus affects younger women.
It appears that sigmoid volvulus is an acquired condition, whereas volvulus of the right colon is congenital in origin. Colonic volvulus is an axial rotation of the colon around a fixed point, usually the mesentery, which can involve the cecum, transverse colon, and splenic flexure.
12 de sept. de 2022 · Etiology. Volvulus is associated with intestinal malrotation, an enlarged colon, a long mesentery, Hirschsprung disease, pregnancy, abdominal adhesions, and chronic constipation. In adults, the sigmoid colon is the most commonly affected part of the gut, followed by the cecum.
Pathogenesis/Etiology. True cecal volvulus is actually an axial torsion of the cecum, terminal ileum, and ascending colon about its mesentery (Figure 19‐1A ). A variant, cecal bascule (Figure 19‐1B ), occurs when the cecum folds anteriorly over the ascending colon without an axial twist.
El vólvulo de colon (VC) es la torsión de una parte del colon sobre su eje mesentérico dando lugar a un cuadro clínico de obstrucción intestinal. La incidencia de VC varía en las diferentes partes del mundo, existiendo un claro predominio en África, Asia, Sudamérica y Oriente Medio.
