"The Five Orange Pips", one of the 56 Sherlock Holmes short stories written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, is the fifth of the twelve stories in The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. The story was first published in The Strand Magazine in November 1891.
A young man seeks Holmes' help to solve a mysterious chain of events that has affected his family for generations. He tells of a series of strange incidents involving five orange pips, a cipher message, and a threatening letter.
Holmes advises John, who has himself just received the foreboding pips, to offer up the box of documents. However, the next day John is discovered dead.
