Duvall won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his role in the film Tender Mercies (1983). His other Oscar-nominated films include The Godfather (1972), Apocalypse Now (1979), The Great Santini (1979), The Apostle (1997), A Civil Action (1998), and The Judge (2014).
As a writer-director, Duvall gave himself one of his most memorable roles, that of the preacher on the run from the law in The Apostle (1997), a brilliant performance for which he received his third Best Actor nomination and fifth Oscar nomination overall.
Por su actuación en este último film, interpretando al teniente coronel Kilgore, Duvall ganó el Globo de Oro y fue nominado por segunda vez al Premio Oscar en la categoría de mejor actor secundario. El ganador de la estatuilla fue el veterano Melvyn Douglas por “Bienvenido, Mr. Chance”.
