Flag of the Greek Orthodox Church. Double-headed eagle emblem of John VIII Palaiologos (r. 1425–1448). The Ecumenical Patriarchate and Mount Athos, and also the Greek Orthodox Churches in the diaspora under the Patriarchate use a black double-headed eagle in a yellow field as their flag or emblem.

The Eastern Orthodox Church tradition, particularly jurisdictions of the Greek Orthodox Church under the direct authority of the Ecumenical Patriarch, often displays this flag. It is a Byzantine double-headed eagle on a yellow (Or) field.

In March 1822 the colours blue and white, expressing dedication to the Greek Orthodox faith, were adopted for two versions of the national flag. On land the flag was blue with a white cross extending to the edges, symbolizing “the wisdom of God, freedom and country.”
